19th Century Baseball, Football Cigar Box Labels
19th Century Baseball & Football Cigar Box Labels. These exceptional pieces of Victorian-era artwork were intended to find a home on the inner lid of cigar boxes, but the embossed lithographs were spared active duty and come to us in magnificently unused, undamaged condition as a result. The artistry and craftsmanship of the pieces are a fine testament to the work of Louis E. Neuman & Co. of New York, a noted artisan of the era. The giltwork highlighting the "Crack Team" headline and the extravagant framing remains in stellar shape, and the period details of the baseball game pictured, and its archaic equipment, should certainly thrill the early baseball historians among us. Light toning is barely evident in the white border area of the label, and very minor evidence on the verso of scrapbook removal does not affect the front. "Centre Rush" offers the earliest of football scenes (or perhaps rugby), and shares the same general theme of the baseball label. It is cropped a little closely at the left side, but is otherwise in excellent condition with the same minor evidence of scrapbook removal on verso. Also included are non-sports labels "Birch Bark" and "Fleet Eagle," which picture a canoeing and Native American horseman respectively. The latter is closely cropped at left and shows scrapbook removal evidence; the former shows only the lightest foxing on the white border area. Four labels total.
