This is a wonderful photo on glass from the mid 1800s. What makes it very interesting is that we have a historical letter that accompanies it and gives a full history of the sitter. His family and he were directly involved in many of the major groups in our history that made America great. It is a portrait of a gentleman, the letter was on the back under the backing and removed fairly carefully by the previous owner. Thankfully the ink and paper were well preserved so we can fully read it. The letter is dated New York March 9th 1861. It reads: In the beginning of the letter there is a more detailed name the cursive is a little stylized so I am not sure on spelling but it looks like Captain Lucius Quintius (I could be off on that) Roberts eldest son of Richard Brook Roberts Major in the continental service of the U.S. Of America at one time after the war commander of Fort Fideus ?, on the Ocoma River, State of Georgia. My grandfather Col. Owen Roberts Was shot under Gens. Lincoln ? At the battle of Stone, S.C. Commanding the 1st regiment of artillery. I have had the honor of dining with General George Washington, when a boy at a fourth of July dinner. For the Cincinnati Society of which Gen. Washington was president. Then there is a lost area of paper something about being named the night the institution was organized in Charleston Carolina. Signed Initials and Roberts. The letter is written by Capt.
