<td width="100%">
Compare this to a painting similar in style, size and condition by Gekko that sold at Christie's March 29, 2005 auction for $4200 plus commission. This is a 19th Century Japanese Painting of the God of Fortune, Hotei looking at the Moon, by Gekko Ogata on a Silk Canvas with the Original Silk Mount. The painting is in Very Good Condition, and the silk mount is in Excellent Condition. It is a very tall painting (over six feet tall), 75"(191cm) x 20"(50cm). Suibokuga, or sumi-e, are monochrome paintings that give a rather quiet impression compared with Western oil painting. They are painted directly without first sketching. This centuries-old art was actively practiced in Japan until about 100 years ago, and it is often said that Suibokuga truly captures the real ?beauty of Japan?.
