19th C. Western Pipe Tomahawk w/ Drop
This is a fabulous 19th-century Western pipe tomahawk with beaded drop. The tomahawk exhibits a hand-forged iron head with wide flaring western blade with tear drop eye and a short vase like bowl. The back of the blade has a rear facing basal process spur and the blade has a notched or cut filed design running down the outsides of both sides of the blade. The bowl has an “X” design and the eye has raised chevrons with some etching as well. The head has a dark chocolate patina coloring and is paired with an old ash wood haft with a nice mellow patina and elaborate decoration with brass covered metal trade tacks. The handle also has a wrap of old telegraph copper wire at the gripping area and at the pierced hole is tied an old drop. The drop is comprised of Indian tanned hide with classic geometric beadwork with old glass trade seed beads, trade clothe, Czechoslovakia trade beads and fringes. The set is likely from the Sioux or Cheyenne of the Northern Plains. From an private ex-Missouri collection of weapons and beadwork.
Tomahawk overall measures 20-inches long and the drop 24-inches.
