19th C. Vigilantes Cowboy Lynching Stereoview
This is an original 19th Century stereoview titled, "The Vigilantes" showing a row of renegade Cowboys next to a hanging tree. In Montana when we hear the term "vigilantes" our first thought is of the Vigilantes of Montana. During the period of 1863–1870, criminals were executed by Helena's Vigilantes. Another site referred to this image as being taken by Granville Resh and was inscribed Virgil Earp (left). Another site referred to this photograph as being circa 1860's The Vigilantes Lynching Mob At Hanging Tree Texas. Our examples is marked, "The Vigilantes." as well as "The Rod and Gun Sporting Series Stereoscopic Gems" and on the back "$400.00". Provenance: From the ex-Jim Aplin Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The card measures 7" by 3.5". U6
