19th C. Tomahawk / War Club Diamond Spontoon Spike
The lot features a rare, unusual kite-shaped Spontoon Spike which would have threaded into an American Indian War Club / Tomahawk. The piece is forged iron with a threaded end. The body has a diamond kite-shape with double-edge having a median ridge running down the center of both sides. This would have been threaded into the bowl of a pipe tomahawk, the front of a war club or gunstock war club or on the back of a tomahawk as the pike / spike. For a representation of a tomahawk with a spike front see the example in the British Museum and documented by John Baldwin in his book “Tomahawks and Pipe Axes of the American Frontier”. Provenance: From a private Native American collection in Northern California. Measures overall 3.75"L by 1.5". U6.
