19th C. Sioux Buffalo Hide Quill & Beaded Pipe Bag
This is an impressive 19th-century Indian tanned buffalo hide large pipe bag with beadwork and quillwork originating from the Hunkpapa Sioux of the Northern Plains. The bag is comprised of sinew sewn Indian tanned Buffalo / Bison hide with a large size which is beautiful adorned with period 1800's glass trade seed beads in a classic geometric pattern shown along both sides, bordering the sides and around the opening. The bottom shows strips of parfleche rawhide which are wrapped in porcupine quill quillwork which shows mineral pigment dyes of red, yellow, blue, purple. There is an old tear near the top on one side and some very slight bead loss, but mostly well preserved. The hide has a heavy slightly stiffening feel with some softness. The bottom of the buckskin or antelope hide fringes shows show run off of the dyes. Truly a beautiful, large bag with amazing beadwork. The beads show colors of greasy yellow, red white heart, cobalt, greasy green, light blue. The circa 1860-1880's pipe bag is well kept and displays well. Measures overall 31-inches long by 8.25-inches wide.
