19th C. Sioux Beaded Buffalo Hide Tobacco Pouch
The lot features a fantastic Sioux beaded buffalo hide tobacco pouch dating to the 19th Century. The bag is comprised of Indian brain tanned buffalo / bison hide with long, frilly hide fringes hanging off the bottom. The pouch is artfully beaded in fantastic colors with different designs on each side. The front has a red cross motif on a blue background and the other side a red cross on a green background. The bag is beaded in glass trade seed beads showing colors of chalk white, greasy yellow, semi-transparent red, light blue, cobalt, and greasy green. The late 19th Century early 20th Century bag was made for use as a tobacco pouch, a rarity. The piece is well kept with some stiff areas but mainly well kept with minimal wear, original ties straps included and little bead loss. Provenance: Tom Hardy Indianapolis, Indiana collection. Measures overall 20 inches long by 5 inches wide.
