19th C. Santee Sioux Rare 4-Sided Medicine Bag
The lot features a rare 4-sided or 4-panel beaded buffalo hide medicine / tobacco bag from the Santee Sioux dating to the 19th Century. The bag exhibits a rare four sided or four panel construction comprised of Buffalo / Bison Indian tanned hide being sinew sewn (with some Antelope Indian tanned hide), showing short buffalo hide fringes running down the panels, as well as a small old section at the top framed in fringes. The bag shows extensive whimsical geometric beadwork showing various elongated diamonds, fivepoint star like or bug design, whimiscal plant like piece, bands and more. The beadwork is all sinew sewn with period correct 19th Century original beads including: Cheyenne pink, candy apple red, cerulean, cobalt, chalk white, greasy yellow, greasy blue, and translucent yellow The bag shows two thick panels of Buffalo Bison hide and some Antelope hide, all being Indian tanned and showing a thick yellow ocher / ochre mineral pigment coloring. Several documented examples of 3-panel or 4-panel bags of a similar design and shape are noted as being Medicine bags, others tobacco bags or pipe bags. The bag shows the panels tapering to a point at the end, similar to bladder bags of the same period. This example shows some worn through spots, some stiffening of the hide, but mostly supple hide. Truly a beautiful bag. The bag was found to be an authentic 19th Century Santee Sioux Buffalo hide example from the experts at Cowan's Hindman. Measures overall 15.5"L by 8"W. U6.
