This is a middle Eastern town scene with figures and animals, this is what appears to be a slave market. Signs of restorations.
The term 'Orientalist' as an artistic movement, can be roughly dated from the 1800s to the early 1900s and refers to the mainly European colonization of what was then referred to as “The Orient,” namely the Levant and North African countries such as Algeria, Morocco and Egypt.
Due to cultural differences and language barriers, many assumptions were made about the people and places visited, and sometimes information was completely fabricated. For example, Eugène Delacroix painted many Orientalist themes yet never visited the Middle East.
This painting is a fine example in which bold Arab warriors, alluring harem women, exotic Middle Eastern architecture, and majestic animals abound. Oil on canvas, appears to be unsigned, in restored condition (see photos of reverse of canvas).

Overall size: 38 x 28 in.
