19th C. Moroccan Koummya Dagger & Jambiya
Presented in this lot are a Moroccan Koummya Dagger and an Arabian Peninsula Jambiya Dagger, circa late 19th or early 20th century. This silver mounted koummya is the characteristic traditional dagger of the Berber and Arabic peoples of Morocco. Localized variant of the Arabic jambiya, the contoured handles, curved double-edged blades and exaggeratedly upturned scabbard tips are all features consistent with such an interpretation. The embossed silver mounted dagger hilt pommel, guard, and scabbard feature Arabic calligraphy and floral designs. The dark-stained handle is hardwood. The jambiya features a floral engraved steel blade on one side which is most likely the face that is shown when it's worn on the waistband. The floral design stamped handle is enamel painted. The jambiya leather shrouded wood scabbard geometric design is still visible on the front of the black scabbard. Both daggers are in nice condition. The koummya measures 16"L, the blade is 9.25"L, 17.25"L in the scabbard. The jambiya measures 13.5"L, blade is 8.75"L, 14.5"L in the scabbard. Combined weight is 2lb, 2oz.
