19th C. Mescalero Apache Beaded High-Top Moccasins
This is a fantastic set of late-19th Century Mescalero Apache “cactus kicker” or “tab-toe” beaded hide moccasins with high-top ankle. The set shows a thick Indian tanned hide moccasin with hightop ankle having a thick parfleche rawhide hard sole bottom which is sinew sewn. The back heal has a trade leather heel with square nails holding it into place. The moccasins are very unique in that they have a classic late-19th Century laced section with brass grommets and an Indian tanned hide lace tying. The end shows a rounded tab known as a cactus kicker or toe-tab with Indian hide top and parfleche hard sole bottom. The set are both beautifully beaded geometric pattern in classic Mescalero Apache designs that are trade thread sewn and use period 19th Century glass trade seed beads in colors of butterscotch yellow, chalk white, cobalt, greasy green, amber, semi-transparent Cheyenne pink/red, greasy white, black and semi-transparent teal. The top of the high-top ankle has a fancy beaded edge. Provenance: From a large Native American weapons and beadwork collection in California. Moccasins 11.75-inches long, 4.5-inches wide, and 7-inches high.
