19th C. Kiowa Mirror Dispatch Beaded Hide Bag
This is a fantastic, beaded hide dispatch signal mirror bag from the Kiowa Native American Indians of the 19th Century. The bag shows an original 19th Century beaded flat bag used as a signal mirror case / dispatch pouch showing classic Southern Plains, Kiowa geometric beadwork being sinew sewn with 19th Century glass trade seed beads. The sinew sewn beads include a chalk white background with pattern, in medium green, black, medium blue and maroon red. The bag shows a fancy beaded edge around the outside and scraped hide back with nice dark coloring. Indian tanned hide. The hide has a stiffness to it, but is still supple. The bag has been repaired / restored at some point, with the Indian tanned hide tie and bottom fringe a later repair. There is little to no bead loss with several sinew areas clearly shown. Provenance: From a private Montana collection curated between 1981-1990, from such dealers and shops as Bud Beyer, Ray Miller, John Helson, etc… Kiowa mirror dispatch bags are exceedingly rare with this being a nice example. Measures overall 12.5"L without the top belt tie, which is 12"L by itself and is 3.75”W. U6.*
