In high relief with great lines, in remarkably good condition with no bullet holes (children would often shoot pellets into them), dents or damage as well as most of the gold finish intact, an extremely desirable attribute for a rare piece of American folk art.

****NOTE: Email for more images. <p> Background<p> Weathervanes were widely popular with American farmers at the time when agriculture dominated the workforce of America in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This rooftop adjunct was not only decorative but provided a reliable guide to wind direction from afar.<p> Today valuable old weathervanes adorn walls above fireplaces, in kitchens and family rooms and even, on a few rooftops.<p> As in the past, vanes in the forms of animals remain the most popular with collectors. Farmers sometimes used vanes, which represented the stock that they raised, so cows and horses were the most common forms with chickens and pigs also widely seen. Eagles, of course, were popular with the patriotic minded. Sheep, ears of corn and mules can also be found quite often but more rare are beavers, fish and wolverines.<p> Today when you are looking at old weathervanes you are likely to find them with bullet holes since they were popular targets for little boys and hunters of the past.
