19TH CENTURY CITY OF PHILADELPHIA FLAG. Approximately 65" x 50" with 2" gold or yellow fringe. Machine-made, possible linen with hand-painted devise approximately 20" x 20" depicting two allegorical figures, one with horn of plenty, one with parchment with anchor surrounding a shield with a plow and a ship. A ribbon beneath says "Philadelphia / Maneto" which means "let brotherly love continue". This phrase was said to have been spoken by the last of William Penn's descendants visiting Philadelphia in the 1800's. Above the shield is an arm holding a scale (representing the scales of justice and mercy). This is the seal of the City of Philadelphia which was adopted in 1874. CONDITION: Overall excellent, good colors to painted devise. Hoist has lined sleeve for rope attachment, also has two sewn leather tabs at either end of hoist. 4-53405 JS18
