Exceedingly desirable and rare engraved Freund Alteration of a Model 1877 Sharps rifle, overall fine condition; .45-2 7/8 caliber, 28” half-round/half-octagon barrel, stamped with Freund patent dates near breech, S/N 202. Overall fine condition with majority of original browning on the barrel and considerable original case colors on the action and lever; checkered deluxe walnut stocks are overall fine; described in detail and photographed by the late F. J. Pablo Balentine in his book “Freund & Bro; Pioneer Gunmakers To The West” (page 347) “. . . Freund altered camming action breechblock, double extractors. Right side of receiver has engraved Indian holding drawn bow, bull buffalo on left side; “Freund Patent, Wyoming Armory, Cheyenne, Wyo. Ter.” on lockplate, entwined initials “W.D.” on tang near breech for W. T. Dawson, editor of “American Field” magazine. Elaborately engraved receiver, hammer, trigger bar, tang and screws. Checkered European walnut pistol grip stock, checkered forend with ebony cap. Trigger bar extends over pistol grip. Buttplate with trapdoor containing wiping rods. Freund-marked front sight, Freund-marked converted Sharps rear sight”. This rifle was featured on the covers of January 1968 and May 1978 of American Rifleman and was covered by James Serven in his article “Frank W. Freund: Frontier Gunmaker” in the February 1970 edition of Guns magazine (copies of all three magazines included with this lot as well as a disc of the articles and numerous close-up pictures of the features of this beautiful Sharps). Also accompanying this lot is a January 7, 1991 factory letter on this rifle that covers evaluation of the gun by the late Dr. R.L. Moore who notes: “This particular gun represents a rare Model 1877 Sharps that has been modified by Frank W. Freund of Cheyenne, Wy.”; Dr. Moore confirms features and concludes his letter with “This gun may well represent the finest produced gun by Freund especially the finest Model 1877”.
