Superb sterling silver open salt or mustard pot with cobalt blue glass liner, made France, 19th century. Oval shape is 3inches long and stands 1 7/8inches high. Crowned, central oval convex medallion separates two winged cherubs riding leopard/lions. The depictions are not identical on either side. Above them are swags of fruit and flowers in extremely delicate repousse work. The 4 corners depict magnificently modelled semi-naked men and women, garlands of leaves draped over their shoulders, foliage skirts, their legs cleverly forming the legs and feet of the salt. On the sides of the dish, between man and woman is an eagle in raised and engraved work. Original cobalt blue liner perfect except for one small chip on the bottom, well hidden from sight. The silver is hallmarked with the maker's mark in a lozenge underneath and a Minerva head for the .950 standard of silver, on the upper rim. The silver is in mint condition. Absolutely no damage of any sort.
