Very unusual gold jewelry. Made in France, 19th century.
A pair of 'buttons', attached by a loop. Each is conical in shape with an elongated, tubular snout, ending in a turquoise stone. The upper / outer side is ridged and beaded in gold, giving an immensely rich effect. The rounded bottom side is made of extremely fine spiralling gold filigree openwork - in immaculate condition with no damage of any sort.
It is possible that these were used as a tie for a cloak, much as a toggle was used in Japanese costume. They may have been used as regular buttons or as some other form of decoration.
The buttons are looped through a gold safety pin, which is marked 18 carat gold.
