1999-W G$5 Tenth-Ounce Gold Eagle--Struck with Unfinis
1999-W<G$5> Tenth-Ounce Gold Eagle--Struck with Unfinished Proof Dies--MS69 PCGS. The West Point mintmark is intended only for the deep cameo proof issues. Business strikes from West Point are not mintmarked, although they are also produced there. The unfinished nature of this piece is reminiscent of the so-called Roman Finish gold coins from 1909 and 1910. That is, matte proofs received a sandblast finish. After 1908, the Mint received strong criticism from the collecting community for the "dull" finish of the coins from that year. For the next two years they did not sandblast the surfaces of proofs, but left them bright with the slightly reflective finish of a coin that was not treated as a matte nor did they receive any polishing. This coin is similar, with the coin in its "natural" state with no die preparation but obviously struck from proof dies. This satiny and exactingly struck piece is as made aside from an infrequent dash of honey patina.
From The Henderson Collection of U.S. Gold Errors.
