1999-P 25C Connecticut MS67 PCGS.Five Piece Set of 1999-P Golden Alloy Experimental Planchet State Quarters MS66 to MS67 PCGS. The set includes the 1999-P Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut designs, each struck in a golden alloy. The Delaware and New Jersey quarters are graded MS66, and the Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Connecticut quarters grade MS67. The story behind these pieces is closely related to the advent of the Sacagawea dollar. By 1999, the once bountiful Treasury hoard of unreleased Susan B. Anthony dollars was depleted due to dispersal from Post Office and New York subway vending machines. A new small-sized Dollar needed to be struck, this time with a gold-colored alloy so that it would not be mistaken for a quarter. Apparently, dollar-sized planchets were not yet available, and gold-coloring experiments were conducted instead on the various Statehood quarter types of 1999. Four experimental composition types are known, either with gold or greenish color, and with and without a copper core. These essentially immaculate pieces have the brassy yellow-gold color of a new Sacagawea dollar, but it is unknown whether they contain a copper core. Regardless, these are very rare, deliberately produced off-metal strikes that were not supposed to reach collector's hands. Each have an unusually sharp strike for a business strike state quarter. Several of the pieces have minor laminations or lintmarks near the rims that correspond with their experimental nature. In addition, the rims are irregular, stretched, and rather flat, as if the collar dies were improperly wide. The Georgia piece is the exception, and has a nearly normal raised rim. This experimental planchet set would be extremely difficult to reproduce.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
