1999-P $1 Anthony Dollar--Struck on an Experimental Planchet--MS66 PCGS. The PCGS insert lists the alloy as 73% copper, 25% zinc, and 2% nickel. A normal Anthony dollar is 75% copper, 25% nickel, while the Sacagawea dollar is 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, and 4% nickel. In 1999, the Mint was testing alloys for a new dollar coin that would have a gold appearance yet possess the same electromagnetic signature as the then-current Anthony dollar. Several 1999-dated statehood quarters and Anthony dollars were struck in various experimental alloys. Presumably, those pieces should have been destroyed, but not all were. This example is primarily sea-green, but has dashes of rose and gold toning. It is well preserved, but softly struck on the olive branch, LIBERTY, and the top of the hair. Struck a few degrees off center toward 3 o'clock. The rims retain the rough texture of the planchet prior to the strike. The rarity of this Judd-unlisted experimental piece is unknown, but this is the first one that we have seen.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
