1998-W $5 American Gold Eagle 1/10 oz. Proof Coin
A 1998-W American Eagle $5 Gold Proof Coin struck at the West Point Mint and housed in its original deluxe presentation packaging. This one-tenth ounce proof issue is part of the American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin series first authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and issued annually by the United States Mint in four weight denominations. The featured example is a one-tenth ounce ($5 face value) proof coin, struck in 22-karat gold alloy composed of 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. The coin has a total weight of 0.1091 troy oz. (3.393 grams) and a net pure gold content of 0.1000 troy oz. (3.110 grams). The obverse design, adapted from Augustus Saint-Gaudens' 1907 $20 Double Eagle, features Lady Liberty striding forward with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol building visible in the lower left and the sun's rays emanating in the background. The date 1998 is inscribed near the bottom. The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, displays a male bald eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and hatchlings. Inscriptions on the reverse include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 5 DOLLARS. This proof coin is encapsulated and set into a blue velvet clamshell case with gold-plated metal corners, adorned with a raised U.S. Great Seal on the front. The case is secured with a gold clasp and housed in a matching blue outer box marked AMERICAN EAGLE and ONE-TENTH OUNCE PROOF GOLD BULLION COIN in gold lettering. Box: 4.25"L x 3.5"W x 1"H. Coin diameter: 16.5mm.
