A 1997-W $5 American Gold Eagle 1/10 oz Proof Coin, struck at the West Point Mint. This official United States Mint bullion coin is composed of 91.67% gold (22 karat), alloyed with 3% silver and 5.33% copper for added durability. The total weight of the coin is 0.1091 troy ounces (3.393 grams), containing 0.1000 troy ounces (3.110 grams) of pure gold content. The obverse design, based on Augustus Saint-Gaudens' iconic image, features Lady Liberty holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol building in the background and a sunburst pattern encircling the scene. The date 1997 is inscribed to the lower right. The reverse, created by sculptor Miley Busiek, depicts a male eagle in flight carrying an olive branch, approaching a nest containing a female eagle and hatchlings.
