1997 Tiger Woods Masters Used Signed Golf Bag
1997 Tiger Woods Masters Tournament Used Golf Bag. Arguably the single most dominant athlete in his chosen field active today, Tiger Woods has joined top icons like Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali among the most recognizable figures in the sporting world. A darling of Madison Avenue, also very much like his basketball and boxing counterparts, Tiger has become a franchise unto himself, a top-selling brand name for everything from sporting goods to automobiles to financial planning. But in one quite notable way does the superstar golfer differentiate himself from these other titans of the industry--almost nothing from his brilliant career has ever emerged upon the collectibles market. Famously stingy even with his autograph, the chasm between demand and supply is probably the widest in the hobby, so that even the most dedicated and well-funded collectors are left with little to satisfy them. With this remarkable offering, Heritage provides the most sumptuous feast imaginable to follow those years of famine, a piece that ranks near the height of what collectors could even dare to dream. Presented upon a platform of absolutely iron-clad provenance is the golf bag utilized by Tiger Woods during his historic 1997 Masters victory.

It was almost exactly fifty years to the day after the debut of Jackie Robinson in a Major League Baseball uniform that a twenty-one year old Woods simply annihilated the field at Augusta with a twelve-shot margin of victory, the largest in the history of the tournament. With good reason, this entry into the brotherhood of the fabled Green Jacket served as notice to the golfing world that the axis had been shifted. Upon a course unavailable to golfers of color until just six years earlier, Tiger Woods had made one of the game's greatest statements.

The black leather Titleist bag that carried Woods' clubs upon that glorious journey to immortality likewise followed an intriguing path following its Augusta service. A back cover advertisement of the Belfair Oaks Country Club (Hilton Head, SC) investor brochure details the journey, which began with Tiger's donation to the South Carolina Junior Golf Association. Tiger made a gift of the bag after being forced to cancel an appearance just after his Masters win. In a silent auction in benefit of the organization, Belfair posted the winning bid. Belfair subsequently held a raffle for the bag, the proceeds going to The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry. The winner of this raffle then returned the bag to Belfair for a second charity raffle, which was ultimately won by our consignor.

The television footage of the 1997 Masters will supply every possible angle for matching up this bag to its hours in the limelight, and the viewer will note that the embroidered "Tiger Woods" on the back, the black on white "Titleist" scripts on the sides, and the double straps on the front are all identical in every regard. Condition is magnificent, with only light Championship use to note. Only with the huge and perfectly rendered gold sharpie signature from Woods does the bag differ from its state during Tiger's greatest moment.

In addition to the aforementioned Belfair brochure, the consignor's winning raffle ticket and a letter of acknowledgment from Woods' agency "IMG" are included with this lot. The letter, which addresses by name the consignor noted as the winning raffle ticket holder in the Belfair brochure, states in part, "We appreciate your offer to return the bag to Tiger, but since the bag has already generated quite a bit of money for charity, we would be just as happy to have you continue to apply the bag in whatever manner you wish to continue to produce charitable contributions. Tiger has no desire to own the bag, and he will be more than happy if the bag can be used to generate additional money to benefit charitable causes." LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph).

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Larg (view shipping information)
