1996-W $5 American Gold Eagle 1/10 oz. Proof Coin
Offered is a 1996-W American Eagle one-tenth ounce gold proof coin, produced by the United States Mint at the West Point facility, denoted by the "W" mint mark. This legal tender coin carries a face value of five dollars and is struck in the Mint's signature proof quality. The obverse of the coin features the classic Augustus Saint-Gaudens design of Liberty striding forward, her hair flowing, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The scene includes a background of sun rays and the U.S. Capitol building at the lower left. The word LIBERTY arcs above the figure, with the date 1996 struck near the bottom right edge. The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, presents a family of bald eagles. A male eagle is depicted in flight carrying an olive branch, while a female eagle shelters her hatchlings in a nest below. Surrounding the image are inscriptions including UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, the denomination of 5 DOLLARS, and the specifications 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD. This coin is composed of 91.67% gold (22 karat), alloyed with 3% silver and 5.33% copper to improve durability. The coin's total weight is 0.1091 troy ounces (3.393 grams), with a net gold content of 0.1000 troy ounces (3.110 grams). The coin is sealed in its original clear plastic capsule and housed within a hinged blue velvet clamshell case adorned with a gold-colored Great Seal of the United States. The spine of the case is marked with the year 1996 and the weight 1/10 OZ in gold lettering. The case fits inside a matching blue outer sleeve marked AMERICAN EAGLE and ONE-TENTH OUNCE PROOF GOLD BULLION COIN. Box: 4.25"L x 3.5"W x 1"H. Coin diameter: 16.5mm.
