1994 Print THE FAVOURITE POET Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema
This is a vintage 1994 print based on the 1888 painting by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema titled The Favourite Poet. The Favourite Poet was created in 1888 as an oil on canvas piece and it is often thought to be one of Alma-Tadema's most enticing pieces. Printed signature "L. Alma-Tadema Op. CCXC." Published in 1994 by Bruce McGaw Graphics. Printed in the USA. SIZE: Approx. 28" x 22". Born in Dronryp, Holland in 1836, Lawrence Alma-Tadema completed his art studies at the Antwerp Academy before settling in London in 1870. His output was prolific, generally of historical genre scenes, and each piece was always numbered with Roman numerals, from his very first painting to his 408th, which was painted two months before his death in 1912. In 1899 he was knighted by Queen Victoria and the same year he received a medal of Honour at the Paris Exposition Universelle. Some of his later paintings included Silver Favourites (1903, City of Manchester Art Galleries); The Finding of Moses (1904, private collection); Caracalla and Geta, Bear Fight in the Coliseum: AD 203 (1907, private collection) and Favourite Custom (1909, Tate Gallery, London). Alma-Tadema died in 1912 and was buried in a crypt in St. Paul's Cathedral.
