1990-S<1C> No S PR69 Deep Cameo PCGS. A simply spectacular example of this celebrated modern-day rarity. The cataloger of the presently-offered specimen spent several minutes with a 7X glass looking for even the most trivial defect, and there was none to be found. The surfaces are fully brilliant, giving the piece the appearance of having just come from the dies a moment earlier. The devices are heavily frosted and the fields are glittering mirrors. Under magnification the fields have an "orange-peel" texture that is a characteristic of proof cents struck on copper-coated zinc planchets, a material which has been in exclusive use for the production of the one-cent denomination since 1982. The variety was produced when the die department at the Philadelphia Mint forgot to add an "S" mintmark to an otherwise normal obverse proof cent die, before shipping it to the San Francisco Mint. The quality control technicians failed to notice the missing mintmark until some of the resulting coins had already been struck and incorporated into Proof sets. Evidently only a relatively small number escaped into the hands of collectors, and survivors rank among the most highly-valued varieties produced at the San Francisco Mint during the latter half of the 20th century.
