1990-S<1C> No S PR68 Deep Cameo PCGS. In July 1990, the U.S. Mint acknowledged that it inadvertently shipped a proof die to San Francisco that lacked the S mintmark. Mint officials estimated that 3,700 pieces were struck and that they recovered 145 sets with the No S cent that had not shipped. Another mint official stated that 3,700 was the average number of proof coins struck from a die, and that there was no way to accurately project the mintage. Many reputable numismatists feel that there are fewer than 200 pieces extant. In any case, this is an infrequent opportunity to acquire a true American rarity. On the present example, both sides are enveloped within coppery-orange patina, and the heavily frosted motifs appear to float over the deep, watery fields. The design elements are exquisitely struck, and the pristine surfaces are devoid of significant abrasions or unsightly carbon spots. Population: 41 in 68, 16 finer (6/05).
