1989 CAMARO IROC-Z 1LE-R7U PLAYERS CHALLENGE GM MOTORSPORTS RACE CAR
GM made specially prepared 1LE Camaro's with the additional R7U options as factory race cars for the Showroom Stock Canadian Players Ltd. / GM Motorsports Race Series from 1989 to 1992. All the cars were identically equipped except for colour choice. The R7U code mandated not only all the high performance race equipment but also included PDL, PW, PHatch, Pulse Wipers, PMirrors, Tilt Wheel Custom Interior and AM/FM Cassette Radio. These were not stripped down race cars but fully useable street cars that you raced.

Model year 1989 was the first year for the special 1LE option and this car is the 9TH in the total of only 74 produced with the R7U package for the Race Series. It is 1 of only 24 painted White with a Black interior. This car raced by Jerry Jaager from B.C. was #17 in the 1989 Western Series. It features original interior, roll cage, and all the original factory race components including the factory sealed motor, engine race chip, and exhaust system. A unique piece of trivia about the car is Greg Moore (Cart Series) worked on it and Jacques Villeneuve (F1 World Champion) rode in it. This is a very rare COPO Camaro of the 80's with many unique features that is a true piece of GM and Canadian racing history.

The car has won numerous awards and has been pictured in Super Chevy, Camaro Performers and Chevy High Performance Magazines. The car is fully documented including Build Sheet, GM Vintage Services Verification, Players/GM Motorsports publications and complete 1989 race history. Car even comes with the drivers original Race Suit and Helmut.

The car is finished in its one repaint from 1990 except for the front bumper and the rear spoiler which were refinished in 2009 when the car was refurbished. It has been put in the original race trim from 1989 including some rare original decals that are no longer available. It has been autographed by the original owner Jerry Jaager and there is complete ownership history of the car.

There were very few of these cars built. A lot of them were severely damaged in the series and others went on to be raced in other series with most if not all the original equipment taken out and changed. There are very few of these left in this original and complete condition. This is a true factory race car that was not available off the showroom floor. It was only available as a special order to those who were registered and approved to race in the series.

The Players/GM Series was backed by GM, Imperial Tobacco and Goodyear. The series had unheard of levels of prize money, live television coverage and great venues to race at including Mosport in the east and Westwood in the west. One famous driver from the series was Ron Fellows and even Paul Tracy attempted a race. The car is fully street legal, a great track day car and is becoming eligible for Vintage Racing with some groups. This is a chance to own a rare “survivor” factory race car.
