<B>1987 Mike Schmidt Career Home Run #523 Baseball.</B></I> Magnificent provenance and historical importance make this offering a very attractive commodity to lovers of the long ball. The ONL (Giamatti) ball comes to us from a long-serving bat boy for the Philadelphia Phillies club, to whom Schmidt inscribed the sphere, "Bruce, Fond Memories at Dodger Stadium, #523, 8/31/87." His 10/10 autograph fills the adjacent side panel. The ball exhibits nice use from its flight into baseball's record books, with number "523" inked on another side panel to mark the ball immediately after it settled beyond the outfield wall at Chavez Ravine. Included in the lot is a photo of Schmidt and our consignor in their Phillies uniforms back in '87, and another of our consignor holding the ball shortly before delivering it to Heritage for auction. Post-500 home run baseballs are always highly sought after by the collecting world, particularly from those who labored prior to the pharmaceutical era.
