Showing just over 20000 miles on the odometer, this 1987 Buick GNX is one of 547 produced.Finished in Jet Black and rolling on black mesh-designed wheels with polished lips, this GNX is fitted with a two-tone black and Sand Grey cloth interior with bucket seats, a center console, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, a power driver’s seat, a Delco AM/FM/Cass stereo system, cruise control and a tilt steering column. The specialized 3.8L V-6 is backed by a 4-speed automatic transmission controlled by a console-mounted shift lever. Some modifications made for extra hp but all original parts come with car

The GNX’s turbocharged and intercooled 3.8L V-6 engine received a number of enhancements, such as freer-flowing heads, improved engine controls, a less restrictive exhaust system and modifications to the Garrett AiResearch turbo. As such, the engine produced a whopping 276 HP and 360 lb-ft. of torque. The 1987 Grand National was capable of 0-60 MPH runs in 4.9 seconds, quicker than contemporary Corvettes, most Ferraris and the Lamborghini Countach. And while during tests the GNX proved to be only marginally quicker at 4.7- and 4.6-seconds, this still planted the GNX and Buick more squarely in the field of the world’s quickest.

Engineers stiffened the body of the GNX, redesigned the rear suspension with a lateral panhard rod, a longitudinal torque bar, stiffer springs, shocks and sway bars, and installed larger 16-inch, staggered aluminum wheels with stickier tires. They then added a transmission oil cooler, composite fender flares, functional front-fender louvers to reduce underhood temperatures, installed special GNX-badges and revised the instrument cluster with Stewart Warner analog gauges. Each GNX received its own serial number plaque on the passenger side of the dashboard. It’s safe to say that Buick and ASC/McLaren indeed achieved their goal and created a car that, “… car collectors will want to own and that automotive writers will never forget.”
