Such is certainly the case with a big, awkward-looking kid from Indiana, who proved season after season on the Boston Garden hardwood that he was anything but awkward, carving himself a place in NBA history and in the hearts of millions of New Englanders. The 1987-88 season saw the Celtics make it all the way to the NBA Finals, where their cause was derailed by Magic, Kareem and the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers.
