A 1986 Whitman commemorative medallion set recognizing milestone editions of two cornerstone publications in American numismatics: the Red Book and the Blue Book. This set includes one silver medallion and a placeholder insert, housed together in a clear plastic display holder with printed Whitman insert. The left side of the display contains the RED BOOK MEDALLION, composed of one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The obverse is inscribed with WHITMAN COIN PRODUCTS ONE TROY OZ. .999 FINE SILVER RACINE, WISCONSIN, along with the Whitman globe logo at center. The reverse commemorates the 40th ANNIVERSARY EDITION 1946-1986 of the publication titled A GUIDE BOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS by R. S. YEOMAN, depicted in relief as a book cover. The right side of the display contains a printed placeholder marked BLUE BOOK MEDALLION. This section notes the 44th EDITION 1942-1986 of the HANDBOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS. The insert is labeled AVAILABLE AUGUST 1986, indicating that the actual Blue Book medallion was not included at the time of packaging and that this space was reserved for its forthcoming release. This commemorative issue was produced by Whitman Publishing and reflects the company's role in the development of numismatic literature and collector guides. Red Book medallion is 38.1mm.
