1978 Indianapolis Racers Official Game Programs
1978 Indianapolis Racers Official Game Programs with Wayne Gretzky. With stirring skills that many equated to a "magic touch," Wayne Gretzky was one of the most-celebrated hockey phenoms in memory by the time that he was 16, which ensued in his recruitment by a number of WHA teams. League rules prohibited the NHL from signing sub-18 year old players, resulting in the Great One signing with the WHA's Indianapolis Racers at age 17. But at the time the league, and the team, were floundering and Racers owner Nelson Skalbania was forced to sell Gretzky's rights to the Edmonton Oilers to make up for his financial troubles. As a result, the indomitable number 99 only logged eight games for the Racers, switching teams very early in the 1978-79 season. Here we present a collection of five official game programs from late 1978. One of the programs comes from one of the Great One's few games in Racers uniform and thus commands a premium as these are prized in the hobby. The other highlight of the lot comes with the December 10 program, which also features Gretzky in his return to Indy as a member of the Oilers. Some of the earliest professional acknowledgements from the man regarded as perhaps the best ever.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
