This medal, commissioned in 1975 by Cardinal Conway, on the advice of Monsignor Shields, who was Administrator of the Archdiocese of Armagh at the time, was struck in an edition of 100 in the large 3.25 inch diameter size and 200 in the smaller 2 inch size, and were mainly intended as gifts to those involved with the canonisation, including Pope Paul VI. They are thus scarce to find for collectors. The design was adapted for commemorative postage stamps issued by the Irish post Office Imogen Stuart, born in Germany in 1927 and living in Dublin since 1951, is one of Ireland's most distinguished sculptors. She is Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Hibernian Academy and holds honorary degrees from UCD and TCD among many distinctions.
