1974: Martin McGuinness, Irish round tower, Portlaoise Republican prisoner art

33 by 15cm., 13 by 6in.

An extremely rare piece of Republican prisoner art made by Martin McGuinness during his time in Portlaoise Prison and presented to Father Jimmy Shiels. A well executed artwork in the form of an Irish round tower, complete with windows and entry ladder, made entirely from matchsticks. On a wooden base inscribed "To Fr. Jimmy from Martin Portlaoise Jail 1974". Martin McGuinness spent time in Portlaoise Prison after he was convicted of being a member of the I.R.A. in February 1974 by the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.
