1971 1st Ed. The Bloody Bozeman by Dorothy Johnson
Featured in this lot is this 1971 first edition of “The Bloody Bozeman” by Dorothy M. Johnson, published by McGraw-Hill Book Company in New York and copy-righted by the author. The Bozeman Trail Conflicts, a pivotal era in American West history, is the focus of the book. A route through the Powder River Country of modern-day Wyoming and Montana was known as the Bozeman Trail in the 1860s. It was mainly used by settlers and miners going to Montana's gold fields. The Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho were among the Native American tribes whose traditional hunting grounds were traversed by the trail. "The Bloody Bozeman" examines the bloody conflicts that developed as a result of the conflict between the ferociously defending Native American tribes and the expanding westward movement of white settlers. The book explores the events that led up to the conflicts, including how the United States Army built military forts along the Bozeman Trail to safeguard settlers. It talks about how the tensions between the Native Americans and the soldiers guarding the forts grew, resulting in fights and skirmishes. The book also investigates the effects of the conflicts along the Bozeman Trail and the eventual abandonment of the trail by the U.S. government as a result of increasing pressure from Native American tribes. The Treaty of Fort Laramie is also covered in the book, which in 1868, fundamentally changed the interactions between the tribes and the US. The book shows a beige dust jacket protecting a black canvas cover. On the dust jacket, it reads, "The Perilous Trail To Montana's Gold / The Bloody Bozeman by Dorothy M. Johnson" in black and red lettering. Beneath the title it shows a portrait photo of a Native American man sitting in his chair holding a rifle across his lap. The bottom of the dust jacket reads, "The American Trails Series / Edited By A.B. Guthrie, Jr." in red lettering. The spine shows the author, title and publishers in red and black lettering as well, while the back shows other books in the series. The book shows good condition overall with some slight wear from use over the years but no obvious signs of damage are noted. The book measures 9 3/16" L x 6 3/8" W x 1 7/16" D.
