Arthur Ashe 1968 U.S. Open doubles trophy plate. Silver plate was awarded to Ashe and Andres Gimeno as runners-up in the men's doubles category. Bob Lutz and Stan Smith proved the victors, but to Ashe's consolation, his placing first in the men's singles made him the celebrated first ever African American player to win the U.S. Open. Silver plate is engraved, ''USLTA / United States Open Tennis Championship / Men's Doubles / 1968 / Runners-Up''. Cartier sterling is identified in a stamp on the underside. Scalloped edge plate measures 6'' in diameter. Light tarnishing and superficial scratches, else fine. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
