<B>1965 50C SMS MS67 Deep Cameo PCGS.</B></I> Government officials' response in 1964 to the rapid increase in silver prices and the consequent disappearance of circulating dimes, quarters, and halves was to blame the collector, eliminate proof sets and mintmarks (until 1968), reduce the silver content of the half dollar to 40%, and issue the so-called Special Mint Sets to collectors in 1965 through 1967. Coins from these sets, while supposedly a step up from regular circulation-strike coinage, for the most part lack even minimal contrast between the fields and devices. The 1965 is the most elusive with cameo or deep cameo contrast, respectively, followed by the 1966 and then the 1967, and the 1965 is hardest to find in high grade. Even Cameo 1965 pieces are seldom found. The grade of the present piece is determined by a hidden tick in the hair above the ear and a couple of ticks in the central reverse, but the contrast between the deep, mirrored fields and the frosty devices is profound.
