1965 10C (1759 dated) Martha Washington Dime-Sized Med
1965 10C (1759 dated) Martha Washington Dime-Sized Medalet, Judd-2101, Pollock-2081, Low R.7, AU58 NGC. q The obverse has a portrait of Martha Washington facing right, while the reverse shows a view of Mount Vernon. Struck in cupronickel-copper (multi-layer composite). Struck from the so-called "nonsense dies" as the legends lack any mention of a denomination. The new Judd text (page 290) states that "although various metals were used, only cupro-nickel clad is confirmed to exist." The USPatterns.com website has even more to say about this particular pattern: "It is believed to be the first metallurgical trials using the current cupro-nickel clad planchets. The Martha Washington obverse was designed by Edward R. Grove and the reverse is by Philip Fowler. There are 6 examples in the Smithsonian two of each size embedded in two blocks of blue lucite along with J2116/P2082 and J2134/P2083." This particular coin is different than either the Pollock plate, or the example illustrated in the new Judd pattern reference, also illustrated on USPatterns.com. This is only the second piece known to the public, the first known was auctioned in 2003 for $51,750 for an NGC MS65. The present example was found in circulation in Illinois sometime in the late 1960s, and was sold in a mixed lot of tokens to a dealer who did not know what it was. Alabama Coin & Silver Co. purchased the piece at the 2006 Memphis Paper Money Convention. Only two are currently known outside of the Smithsonian. The surfaces have most of the luster remaining over light gray color with pale champagne toning. Traces of wear are evident on the highest points, and minor impediments are exhibited on each side. We have previously offered examples of the quarter and half dollar size medalets, but this is the first example of the dime size that we have handled.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
