Because of the lack of official documentation and their scarcity in auctions in the past, it has been difficult to say with any degree of certainty what these pieces are actually worth. However, with the appearances they have made over the past year or so, it cannot be long until the Guide Book will be forced to recognize these coins, just as the two major certification services have. Of course, once they are in the Red Book they will have official status as a collectible (and key) member of their respective series, and they will also have published prices to guide collectors about their value.
The proof about these special coins is on their surfaces. One might not give a second thought to coins from 1964 as a rule, but when forced to one has to admit that there is something unusual about these pieces. The strike is razor-sharp, as one would expect from a proof. The fields show an unusual hybrid satin and semi-prooflike finish. This is somewhat different from the 1965-67 SMS coins, but it is similar enough to carry the SMS designation. We believe these were prototypes that were struck before the SMS coins were minted in 1965, trial pieces if you will. Perhaps they should be considered as a part of the pattern series, but like 1856 Flying Eagle cents and Stellas, they are already on their way to becoming integrated in the regular series of U.S. coins from 1964. Much still remains to be discovered and revealed about these special coins, and undoubtedly much will be revealed in future years. For now, what we have are an occasional offering in auctions and a lot of questions. Included in this set are:

1964 Cent 1C MS65 SMS Red PCGS. This particular coin has full cherry-red mint luster. The obverse shows the trace of a fingerprint in the right obverse field. This is an interesting occurrence in itself and one that leads one into another realm of speculation. This fingerprint remnant most likely was not put on the coin recently. It has the look of slight discoloration that has been on the coin for many years. If our theory about these coins being prototypes is correct, the chances are they were not handled with any degree of care in the Mint when they were produced.

1964 Nickel MS68 SMS Full Steps PCGS. The surfaces are essentially perfect and each side displays light golden toning. The characteristic light die polishing marks can be seen (with magnification) in the fields.

1964 Dime MS68 SMS PCGS. The original mint brilliance is only interrupted by a faint speckling of golden color on the obverse. Struck from a Blunt 9 obverse die.

1964 Quarter MS67 SMS PCGS. Like the dime, this piece's brilliance shows a faint flecking of pale golden color on the obverse. The dies are more obviously striated on this piece.

1964 Half MS67 SMS PCGS. Very sharply struck with die polishing marks in the field that have produced a distinctive semi-prooflike finish on this coin. Just the slightest accent of pale golden toning is seen on this immaculate coin.
