1964 1C Cent--Struck on a Clad Dime Planchet--MS63 PCGS. This is such an unusual coin, it took consultation with a couple of catalogers, some head-scratching, and out-of-the-box thinking to be able to postulate just how it could exist. The best explanation we can come up with is that the Mint was experimenting with clad planchets at the end of 1964. That part is easy enough to accept, but what happened next? Most likely Cent and Dime planchets got mixed up somehow and this coin resulted. Another possibility is this coin was struck on a clad planchet for a foreign country and was left in the hopper at the end of the striking run, the hopper was used for Cents next and this planchet was mixed in with the regular Cent planchets. That's a bit far-fetched and we really like the first theory more. Either way, this is an extremely rare error and very likely the only of its kind. The strike is well centered with just a bit of the motto cut off at the top of the obverse. The surfaces are bright and highly lustrous with little that could be termed as a problem on either side.
