1964<10C> SMS MS68 PCGS. These are intriguing coins. We have handled several 1964 Special Mint Set coins and sets over the past several years. They are coins that simply should not be. And yet they exist in very small numbers. Presumably, a number of test strikes, perhaps 50 or so, were done in 1964 for the next year's special (non-proof) strikings: the 1965 Special Mint Sets. In Kevin Flynn's book The Authoritative Reference on Roosevelt Dimes, he states that several 1964 Special Mint Sets were found as part of Eva Adams' estate. What we have been told is that these sets turned up in a Stack's auction in 1993 and were part of a prominent New York dealer's estate. Of course, both stories could be true.
The fields on this piece show signs of extensive die polish. This in turn has imparted a semi-prooflike sheen, but definitely not a proof finish, to the surfaces. The devices are also bright and match the fields with no contrast evident. The striking details are uncommonly bold, and based on strike alone, one might conclude this is a proof. Thus, this piece is "neither fish nor fowl," just as one would expect from a Special Mint Set finish as seen on the 1965-67 coins. There are no obvious contact marks on either side and there is just a whisper of golden toning on the left side of the obverse. Population: 3 in 68, 0 finer (8/05).
