Arthur Ashe's American Tennis Association 1962 trophy. Impressive silver trophy was awarded to young Ashe as the winner of the men's singles competition in the National Championships of 1962. The American Tennis Association was founded in the early twentieth century by a group of African American professionals. At the time of his win here, he was a just a student at Sumner High School in St. Louis, Missouri. The very next year Ashe became the first African American ever selected for the U.S. Davis Cup Team and was awarded a tennis scholarship to UCLA. Stately trophy cup is engraved, ''ATA / National Championships - 1962 / Central State College - Wilberforce, Ohio / Men's Singles Winner / Trophy Donated By / Pepsi-Cola Company''. Poole Silver is stamped to the underside. Measures 10.25'' in diameter, 11'' in height and weighs 6 pounds, 2 ounces. Foot diameter measures 6''. Trophy comes with a removable metal insert, likely for use as a liner when trophy cup serves as a floral vase. Rust and loss of metal to the bottom of the liner, with moderate tarnishing to interior of trophy itself, else near fine. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
