1961 Continental Dollar Restrike--Overstruck On
1961 Continental Dollar Restrike--Overstruck On An 1887-S Double Eagle--MS64 Prooflike NGC. This is apparently one of the 1961 restrikes made by Q. David Bowers. While these pieces were supposedly only struck in pewter, an 1876 double eagle undertype surfaced in the mid-1980s. And now this piece. Traces of the undertype are very faint but a strong magnifier and a good light shows traces of the 88 in the date between the L and C in CONTINENTAL CURRENCY. We cannot definitively state that there is a 7 beneath the C in CURRENCY, but apparently NGC thinks so. The S-mintmark is very difficult to see on the reverse, but is faintly visible to the right of the E in DELAWARE. The surfaces are bright and highly reflective with no obvious impairments. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
