In 1958, General Motors celebrated its 50th anniversary, and as way of honoring the landmark, it created new anniversary models for each of its brands. In Chevrolets case, 1958 saw the introduction of a new, top-of-the-line, two-door Bel Air hardtop and convertible, known as the Bel Air Impala. Among some of the many new developments in the 1958 Bel Air Impala were the abandonment of a perimeter frame for a unit chassis with X-crossed rails and the use of a coil-spring suspension system instead of leaf springs. With more than 55,000 convertibles and 125,000 hardtops being sold, the new Impala helped General Motors regain its position as the No. 1 American brand. In 1959, the Impala become its own model and was redesigned with a new body shell shared with sister brands Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac. Now available in two-door sedan, two-door hardtop, four-door hardtop and four-door sedan, the Impala came standard with a 235 CI Blue Flame inline 6-cylinder engine, but it was also offered with seven different V-8 engine options ranging from a 283 CI Turbo-Fire to a special W-series Turbo-Thrust 348 CI powerplant producing 350 HP. This example is a 1960 Chevrolet Impala Convertible that is beautifully finished in turquoise with a matching turquoise interior and a white convertible top. Equipped with the 283 CI Turbo-Fire V-8 mated to an automatic transmission, this boulevard cruiser also sports power steering and power brakes. Sitting on a sizable 119-inch wheelbase, this commanding Impala convertibles exterior features a Continental kit, body-color rear fender skirts and accessory exhaust ports. Other features include turquoise split-bench seats with cloth inserts, cloth-insert door panels, a pushbutton radio, a heater/defroster, dual antennas, full-size spinner wheel covers and wide whitewall tires.
