312 cubic inch overhead valve V8 engine rated at 205 horsepower, four-barrel carburetor, three-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, semi-elliptic rear leaf springs with live rear axle, power assisted four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes; wheelbase: 118"- Ford created its Mercury line-up in 1939 to fill the medium-priced gap between the Ford DeLuxe and its Lincoln-Zephyr models. Mercury was one of the first cars styled in FordÒs new in-house design studio, and the first developed from a full-scale clay mock-up. Its up-market approach proved to be a very wise move by Ford as Mercury would erode sales at both GM and Chrysler for decades. To this day, Mercury continues to be the slightly more mature big brother to Ford Motor Company and a great alternative to GM and Chrysler up-market offerings. This stunning Monterey is a great example of why people chose Mercury over others in 1956.
