1955 Lincoln Cent DDO NGC MS65 RB PQ
Full original mint orange brilliance, fiery, with a few flecks here and there of coppery golden highlights accounting for the slightly modified grade of R&B, but as pristine as we have seen on any comparable specimen in recent times.

It seems that one day in 1955 several coining presses at the Philadelphia Mint were stamping out Lincoln cents. As the containers for each press were filled with struck cents, they were tipped into a shared bin, along with the output from other presses. Somewhat later in a particular day a press operator noticed that the cents being produced by one press in particular were untidy on the obverse. The press was stopped, and the die removed. By that time approximately 44,000 coins had been struck from the die, of which about 24,000 had been combined with others. About 20,000 remained near the press. These were destroyed, but it was decided to let the others go. These were later discovered to be the famous 1955 doubled die cents. (#2826)
