The 1920s were a time before the advent of radio and mass communications, an era when newspapers held the power to make legends. There were several writers at the time (Grantland Rice, Red Smith, Shirley Povich, Heywood Braun, among others) who would build up sports legends using grandiose prose and the reach of syndicated news columns. Red Grange, Babe Ruth, and Bobby Jones, were among many who's legends were formed by not only their amazing athletic performances, but by the writers who painted their portraits to the masses. Howie Morenz was hockey's contribution to this Golden Age. He was a superstar for the Canadiens, playing a high speed mad-dash game, scoring spectacular goals, and winning 3 MVP awards and 3 Stanley Cups. His career ended on a broken leg, then his life within weeks after when blood clot developed in his heart. His funeral, held at the old Montreal Forum, drew thousands. This card, an 'Oldtime Great' from the 55 Parkie set, grades 3 VG by SGC.
