1955/55 1C Doubled Die Obverse MS64 Red PCGS. The existence of the 1955 Doubled Die came about as a result of emergency conditions--a coin shortage in the Fall of 1955. Many other mistakes were made in the history of the mints from similar, hurried situations. The ones that come immediately to mind are the overdates struck during the First and Second World Wars. In the case of the 1955 Doubled Die, we know what time of day the error occurred, if not the specific date. On page 220 of the Lange reference, he states it happened during the midnight to 8 a.m. shift. Chief Coiner Sydney Engel was told of the hub doubling, and it was estimated that between 20,000 and 24,000 pieces were struck the night before. The problem was that the Doubled Die coins were interspersed with non-problem coins, and to recall and destroy the Doubled Dies meant condemning the entire night's production, or approximately 10 million cents. He chose to release all the coins into circulation.
Since these pieces were generally found in circulation in the Northeast, especially the Boston area, most show some mellowing of the surfaces and few retain the original fiery-red color seen on this coin. No brown is present on this piece, just varying shades of red. An outstanding example of this rare and highly collectible 20th century cent that is seldom encountered with full red color.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
